The U.S. Army awarded Honeywell a contract valued $1.1 billion for engines that power their M1 Abrams series of tanks.
“Honeywell International, Phoenix, Arizona, was awarded a $1.1 billion modification to contract for the Automotive Gas Turbine 1500 engine program,” U.S. Department of Defense said in a release today.
Honeywell’s AGT1500 is the turbine engine used by the U.S. Army, United States Marine Corps and National Guard to power the M1 Abrams fleet. The engine provides 1,500 horsepower to propel the 72 ton tank at speeds up to 42 mph, enabling superior acceleration and mobility.
Work is expected to be completed by September 30, 2025.
