Ethiopia recently took center stage in the defense technology arena by revealing a segment of its military might. This came in an exabition of Ethiopias new fleet of 32 SH-15 155mm self-propelled howitzers. These formidable machines, manufactured by the Chinese corporation Norinco, represent a significant stride in Ethiopia’s quest for modernized defense infrastructure.
Unveiling Norinco’s SH-15: Evolution and purpose
The genesis of the SH-15 can be traced back to the early 2000s when China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) embarked on a mission to engineer a series of self-propelled howitzers. Inspired by the French CAESAR artillery system, this initiative aimed to create a range of export-oriented artillery platforms mounted on truck chassis. The SH-15 emerged in 2017, succeeding its predecessor, the SH-1, and swiftly garnered international attention as an emblem of cutting-edge artillery technology.
Precision and power: Exploring the SH-15’s arsenal
At the heart of the SH-15 lies its 155mm/52 caliber gun, a testament to versatility and firepower. This howitzer stands as a multifaceted weapon system capable of accommodating an array of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, smoke rounds, and indigenous precision-guided munitions such as the GP155 or GP1. Its firing range spans from 20 to 30 km with standard ammunition, but it can also deploy rocket-assisted artillery projectiles, reaching an impressive 53 km.
Unraveling performance and defense features
Mobility: The Key to strategic deployment
Empowered by a 520hp diesel engine, the SH-15 embodies agility and mobility, reaching a top speed of 90 km/h and boasting an estimated range of 500 km. This blend of power and mobility renders it a force to reckon with in various operational scenarios. Moreover, its weight of around 22 to 25 tonnes has been strategically optimized for air transport, making it compatible with numerous medium aircraft, including the Y-9 and the larger Xi’an Y-20.
Global impact and deployment reach
The SH-15’s impact transcends geographical boundaries, finding its way into the military arsenals of various nations. Notably, Pakistan has procured a significant number, estimated between 236 to 300 units, while Ethiopia secured a fleet of 32. Beyond these acquisitions, the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) integrated it into their arsenal as the Pào Che Liúdànpào 181 (PCL-181). Its presence has been observed in diverse operational theaters, including deployments in conflict zones like Syria, underlining its global significance and adaptability.
The SH-15 155mm self-propelled howitzer epitomizes a fusion of precision, power, and strategic mobility. Its integration into Ethiopia’s military framework signifies the nation’s commitment to modernization and fortification of its defense infrastructure, bolstering its preparedness in an ever-evolving geopolitical landscape.
