Italy’s defense spending is taking flight, with a new budget document revealing a significant increase in military procurement and a commitment to advanced technology. The 2024 defense budget, totaling €9.3 billion ($10.3 billion), represents a 16.8% jump compared to 2023 and marks a continued upward trend in defense spending.
F-35 Fleet Expansion: A Boost for Air Power
At the heart of the budget lies a significant expansion of Italy’s F-35 fighter jet fleet. The country will purchase 25 F-35s, bringing the total to 115 aircraft by 2035. This expansion includes 15 F-35As for the Italian Air Force and 10 F-35Bs to be shared between the Air Force and the Italian Navy. The F-35Bs, designed for short take-off and vertical landing, will be operated from the deck of the Italian Navy carrier Cavour and the new Landing Helicopter Dock, the Trieste.

Eurofighter Refresh: Maintaining Current Capabilities
While looking ahead to the next generation of aircraft, Italy is also prioritizing the maintenance and modernization of its existing fleet. The budget includes a €690 million investment in the Eurofighter program, specifically for acquiring 24 fourth-tranche jets. This move will ensure the replacement of 26 first-tranche aircraft by 2029, maintaining a critical component of Italy’s air defense capabilities.
Beyond Fighters: Expanding Maritime and Training Capabilities
Italy’s defense strategy extends beyond aerial operations. The budget sets aside €560 million for acquiring new maritime patrol aircraft to be operated jointly by the Navy and Air Force. Furthermore, the budget includes the purchase of 15 new M-346 trainer jets for the Italian Air Force. These jets will replace the aging M-339s, providing the Air Force with a modern platform for pilot training. The M-346 will also equip the Frecce Tricolori, Italy’s renowned acrobatic team, allowing them to develop new maneuvers, perform in-flight refueling, and maintain pilot combat readiness.
