Oshkosh Wins Army Contract with Modernized Heavy Vehicle Designs

Oshkosh Defense, a leading manufacturer of military vehicles, has secured a significant contract from the U.S. Army, ensuring the continued production and modernization of the nation’s heavy-duty transportation fleet. The five-year agreement, valued at approximately $1.54 billion, underscores the Army’s commitment to equipping its forces with technologically advanced and reliable vehicles.

This contract, awarded by the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA), falls under the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) program. This program encompasses a range of essential vehicles that form the backbone of the Army’s logistical operations, including the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT A4), Palletized Load System (PLS A1), PLS Trailer, and Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET A1).

A Legacy of Heavy Lifting

Oshkosh Defense boasts a long-standing partnership with the U.S. military, producing over 71,000 modernized heavy tactical vehicles and trailers for the Army and its allies. This latest contract represents a continuation of that legacy, highlighting the company’s proven ability to deliver high-performance vehicles capable of withstanding the rigors of diverse operational environments.

“We are extremely honored that the U.S. Army continues to invest in the proven Oshkosh Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles,” said Pat Williams, chief programs officer at Oshkosh Defense. “Our continued collaboration with the Army ensures that we deliver exceptional, high-performance vehicles with the latest technologies and active safety features.”

Modernization Takes Center Stage

This new contract goes beyond simply maintaining the existing fleet. A key element involves integrating advanced technologies to modernize the FHTV lineup, extending their lifespan and reducing operational costs. Oshkosh Defense plans to implement upgrades such as drive-by-wire capability, Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) systems, and electrification options. These enhancements will improve the vehicles’ performance and efficiency and prepare them for the evolving demands of future military operations.

“The evolution of the FHTV through technical insertions and recapitalization is a testament to our innovation and focus on increased capabilities,” continued Williams. “By integrating new technologies into the FHTV fleet, we are not only enhancing operational efficiency but also future-proofing our vehicles to meet the evolving needs of the Warfighter.”

A Strategic Win for Oshkosh

This contract is a significant win for Oshkosh Defense, solidifying its position as a key supplier for the U.S. Army. Having faced increased competition in recent years, particularly in the light tactical vehicle market, the company’s success in securing the FHTV V contract reaffirms its expertise in the heavy vehicle sector.

This latest contract follows a series of notable wins for the company. In June 2024, the Army awarded Oshkosh Defense contract modifications totaling $231.9 million for modernized trucks and kits under the previous FHTV IV contract extension. Last December, the company secured a significant Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) order from the Israeli Ministry of Defense and a $201 million deal to supply military trucks to Ukraine’s Army.

The FHTV V contract award allows the Army to procure new vehicles as early as August 2024, ensuring a seamless transition and continued readiness for heavy transportation needs. As Oshkosh Defense embarks on fulfilling this contract, the company will play a critical role in equipping the U.S. Army with the robust and modernized vehicles necessary to support its mission-critical operations in the years to come.
